Funeral services for Chester Arthur Johnson, 63, widely known Scranton resident, were conducted from the Scranton Lutheran church at 2 p.m. Monday, November 13. Burial was made in the Scranton cemetery.

Pall bearers were Pat Whalen, M. Iverson, P. Oster, O. K. Ellingson, L. H. Peterson and Glen Eldredge. Honorary pall bearers were Dr. K. M. Murray, Sam Elenbaum, J. H. Tupling, Earl Butler, L. W. Hammer and Ben Paulsen.

Mr. Johnson passed away in a Dickenson hospital Thursday, November 9. He was taken to the hospital Wednesday. He had suffered from a heart ailment for several years.

Mr. Johnson was born May 27, 1887 at Wood Lake, Nebraska. When Chester was ten years old the family moved to Fairfax, S. D., where the family home has been ever since. He grew to manhood at Fairfax. Upon completion of his education there he attended Military Academy at Culver, Indiana for three years.

In 1917 he moved to Scranton. During World War I he served in the armed forces of the U. S. his outfit seeing much overseas duty in France. He was a member of the 338th Field Artillery.

He was discharged from the service January 7, 1919 with the rank of Sargeant. Upon his return to Scranton the board of directors elected him as manager of the Johnson Fuel Co., a very large concern at that time.

He was united in marriage to Miss Frances Ryan, Scranton, on August 26, 1922. To this union four children were born, Charles of Grand Forks; William of Aberdeen, S. D.; Nancy Ann of Scranton. One daughter, Ava Virginia passed away at the age of one year.

Since 1936 he served as Postmaster at Scranton.
His passing is mourned by his wife, his three children, his mother, Fairfax; and a sister, Mrs. C. F. Auerswald, Fairfax, and by a large number of friends and neighbors.
