Lloyd E. Gripp, 85, of Lehigh, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004 at the Southfield Wellness Community at Webster City. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Foster Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Jenna Zirbel. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery, north of Stratford. Visitation was at Fosters from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and prior to the services on Thursday.


Lloyd Evans Gripp, son of Harvey and Hattie Heath Gripp, was born September 15, 1919 at St. Charles, IA. He received his education at St. Charles, graduating in 1937. He worked for the Ford dealership and was owner/operator of a service station at St. Charles. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Army Infantry, 7th Division at the Aleutians, Kwajalein, Philippine and Ryukus Islands of the South Pacific for 4 1/2 years. Following his discharge, he worked at Des Moines for the Green GMC truck garage and as service manager for Paul Manning Chevrolet. He later owned Service Chevrolet at Fayette and Lauderbach Chevrolet at Perry. On June 4, 1950, he married Esther Genevieve Barr at the Home United Methodist Church. In 1958, he started farming near Lehigh and retired in 1990. The couple continued to reside on the family farm.


Mr. Gripp is survived by his wife, Esther; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Barbara Gripp of Webster City; a precious granddaughter, Lena Gripp; sisters Lola Bennington of Winterset; Dorris Reed of Osceola and four nieces.


He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Gripp.


He was a member of the Homer United Methodist Church, St. Charles Masonic Lodge for 50 years, Stratford American Legion, Boone Valley Izaak Walton League and a charter member of the Professional Farmers of America.

Mr. Gripp served in the Service Co. of the 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, WWII, Pacific Theater of Operations.
