Hartwell Powers Worcester was one of twelve children born to Almond and Emeline E. (Steele) Worcester.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Civil Union Army. He enlistd originally in Company B, 11th Vermont Infantry Regiment in 1862. The unit was redesignated Company B, 1st Regiment Vermont Heavy Artillery on 10 Dec 1862. He served with his brother, Earl.C., as ambulance driver for Ft. Stevens Hospital in Washington, D.C.

On 20 August 1859, at the age of 23, Hartwell married 18 year old Louisa Jane Ferris, in Roxbury, Vermont. She was the daughter of John and Louisa (Knapp) Ferris. The couple had five children, two sons and three daughters; Jennie M., Fred E., John H., Jessie M., and Lura F.

Hartwell was a railroad carpenter.

He was named in honor of his mother's step-father, Hartwell Powers.
