PFC John D Maggio

John served as a Private First Class, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 12, 1943 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed in the building of aircraft and also as Single, without dependents.

John died in the "Line Of Duty" of a non-battle related incident during the war.

A 21 year old soldier was drowned and his companion, a 19 year-old sailor, swam to safety after their canoe capsized in Scajaquada Creek about 200 feet west of Elmwood Avenue Sunday afternoon at 4:15 o'clock.

The body of PFC John D. Maggio of 23 Spruce St, was recovered from the middle of the muddy stream at 5:20 o'clock.

Seaman John J. White of 214 Swan St, who swam to shore to summon aid, called to his companion to cling to the boat.
