Auguste Winkel was born June 1, 1864 in Germany. She died September 28, 1920 near Isabel, Ziebach County, South Dakota. Her death was due to a strangulated hernia resulting from a botched gall bladder operation, which was performed on the kitchen table in her home.

Auguste (or Augusta) came to the United States in 1887. Upon her arrival, she traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, where she married Frederick William Krumrei on June 25, 1887 in Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was the mother of six children: Frederick William, Elsie Louise, Mathilda Hildegarde, William Frederick, Lydia Augusta, and Frank Elmer. All survived her at the time of her death.

In 1911, the family moved to a homestead in Ziebach County, South Dakota. They loaded all of their possessions onto a train and traveled to their new home. When they arrived, upon seeing what a desolate place they had come to, Augusta broke down and cried.

Augusta is buried in Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings, Minnesota with her husband Fred and son Fred, Jr.
