Edward Burnidge was born at Kiddaminster, England in 1815. He was the son of John Burnidge and Mary Wells, supposedly was born in London. Edward Burnidge and two of his brothers, Alfred, and Thomas came to America and settled in Elgin and Chicago. Edward married Phoebe Jane Hall. They had 14 children, six sons and eight daughters. One was Samuel Burnidge which was Jim and Wayne Mathis' great grandfather. The youngest daughter was Nellie Hall Burnidge. Edward was a seaman while in England, sailed to South America, Spain, and when he came to America, joined the navy in America and served on the historic battleship," United States." He also served in the civil war in the 141st Illinois Vol. Infantry. All but the youngest of their children were born in Illinois. After the civil was in 1871, Kansas lands were opened to veterans. Edward homesteaded on land in north Pottawatomie Co. Kansas. Merrill Hall Burnidge was their youngest son, and was born on the Kansas Homestead, about seven miles from Frankfort, KS. When Merrill Hall Burnidge was about eight years old, he died of scarlet fever. His older brother was John Burnidge. When he was a young married man, he homesteaded northwest of Wheaton, KS. The cemetary across the road from his home, where Merrill Hall is buried is where Louise Flynn (relative) used to visit the "little uncle" and put flowers on his grave, usually sunflowers. Samuel Burnidge married Mable Kibbe, Jim and Wayne Mathis' grandmother. Their first son was James Merrill Hall Burnidge, which made Phoebe Jane very proud and happy because the Merrill name was dear to her.

Edward Burnidge's family had worked in the carpet mills in Kiddaminster, England. After he learned the trade, he had a loom, and wove carpets while on the homestead and many yards of his carpeting were on the floors in the Pottawatomie County and Marshall County I n Kansas. Their daughter, Martha, who never married, in buried beside them.
