On June 30, 1956, he married Sylvia Ruth Justvig at Wichita, Kansas and to this union were born a daughter, Kelly, and two sons, Chip and Casey. AFter serving in the United States Army from 1957 until 1959, Bill was employed at Beech Aircraft Company for a few years, and also worked as a bricklayer in Wichita. In the early 1970's, Bill became a ranch manager for Packard Cattle Company in Limon and Elbert, Colorado. After spending five years in Colorado, Bill and Sylvia bought a small ranch north of Howard, whe he raised cattle for 23 years.
Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his dogs, but he especially loved working cattle, and training and racing horses. In 1998, he became a steward at Eureka Downs and later worked for the Kansas Racing Commission as a horse steward and a judge for dog racing. Bill became a correctional officer at the El Dorado Correctional Facility in 1991, and continued in that position until his retirement in 1997.
He was a member of Mulvane Masonic Lodge #201, the Kansas Peace Officers Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association. Bill enjoyed dancing and, most of all, he loved to visit with people and he "never met a stranger." He devoted much time to being with the children and loved his family very much. He also enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his daughter, Kelly Davis and her husband Jerry, of Sedan; his sons, Chip Crum and his wife Nancy, of Howard; and Casey Crum of Pittsburg, Kansas; his mother, Dorothy Crum of Mulvane, a brother, Galen Crum and his wife Evona, of Mulvane; a sister, Lucretia Stetler and her husband Jack, of Wichita; a granddaughter, Heather Harding of Manhattan; and two grandsons, Billy and Christopher Crum of Howard. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Frederick Crum.
