Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer (Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois), Thursday, May 25, 1944:
   STAUNTON, IL--Paul Henry Fischer, 85, lifelong resident of Staunton and prominent in business and civic affairs for many years, died at 7 o'clock a.m. Friday at the St. Vincents Hospital in Taylorville. Mr. Fischer, who had been residing with his daughter for several months while his wife, who has a fractured hip, has been in St. Vincents Hospital at Taylorville, became very ill about three weeks ago and was taken to the hospital. Mr. Fischer was born in Staunton, April 3, 1859, a son of the late Christopher and Anna Frank Fischer, early settlers of this city. Mr. Fischer's father established a general store here when the village was small. In 1884 he retired and the store was conducted for thirty-five years by Paul H. Fischer and the late Adam Fischer and known as Fischer Bros. About twenty years ago he retired and devoted his time to his home and garden. He received his education in the Staunton Lutheran school. He was a member of the school board for many years, serving as secretary. On October 21, 1884 he married Miss Laura Bross, of St. Louis. To this union seven children were born, three preceding the father in death. William C. Fischer of St. Louis, died July 12, 1941, Walter H. Fischer of Hines died October 16, 1943 and a son, Elmer, died in infancy. Survived by his wife, one son, Harrison D., Decatur, three daughters, Mrs. L.J. Ore, Taylorville, Mrs. Joseph Messick, Berwyn and Mrs. Anna Staker, Normal. Ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive and one brother, Henry A. Fischer and one sister, Mrs. Ernst L. Weiss of this city.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday at the Carleton Funeral Home in Staunton, Rev. C.E. of Alton pastor of the Christian Church in this city officiate. Burial in the Staunton City Cemetery with Staunton lodge, No. 177 A.F. & A.M. in charge of services at the grave. Pallbearers were Charles McGaughey, B.G. Fridli, H.L. Burkhardt, A.C. Webster, J.W. Overbeay and E.A. Rahm.
