Mark Duane Saxton of Burley passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, of natural causes at the Cassia Regional Medical Center in Burley at the age of 89.

Mark was born Dec. 22, 1922, to Elmer Charles and Cora Lillian (Kidd) Saxton on his Grandfather Kidd's farm in Rupert, Idaho. He was the fourth of nine children. He attended schools in Declo, growing up during the Great Depression when times were very difficult for everyone. After high school graduation, he entered the United States Navy during World War II. Mark served in the Navy for 40 years and retired as a Top Chief Petty Officer. He was indeed one of the last of the "Greatest Generation." He also served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was very proud to be an American; he loved his home and freedom and was proud that he was able to preserve it.

Mark married Betty Jean Hoggan in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on March 7, 1947. Together, they had three sons, Michael Duane (Beverly) of Sheridan, Wyo., James H. (Deborah, deceased) of Sandy, Ore., and Steven Mark (deceased). He has four grandchildren, Jennifer, Jacqueline, Brian and Elizabeth. Mark has a very special niece, Kara Steinberg, whom he loved very much and considered her the daughter he never had. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Fern Jensen and Cora Weaver; and three brothers, Paul, Carl and Grant Saxton. He is survived by his sisters, Fay Ward of Connor Creek, Idaho, and Rhea Smith of Burley, Idaho; and one brother, Dean Saxton of Declo, Idaho. His wife, Betty Jean, died in a tragic automobile accident on June 14, 1983. Mark called her his "Goddess." He loved her dearly.

After his retirement from the U.S. Navy, Mark worked in many businesses. He was a chain store manager and owner of a retail/wholesale manufacturing company. He belonged to the chamber of commerce, the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, the Fleet Reserve and the International Association of Personnel Employment Security. Mark was a lifetime learner. He attended Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology and was a published author and poet extraordinaire. Mark was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a branch president, a stake clerk and in many other callings that he enjoyed.

He married Lois Rosalie Gunderson (Mortensen) on Nov. 27, 2009, in Burley. They truly loved each other and cherished every minute they had together. They built a beautiful home where they could sit on the deck and watch the Snake River go by. This would entertain them for hours, just talking and laughing together. They were truly meant for each other. With this union, he became the loving and beloved stepfather/grandfather to Linda Turney of Layton, Utah, Bruce and Kathy Mortensen of South Jordan, Utah, Denny and Mindy Mortensen of Holladay, Utah, Loren and Paula Mortensen of Richfield, Utah, Monty and Teresa Mortensen of Idaho Falls, Idaho, June Hodge of Burley, Idaho, Mark and Brenda Mortensen of Rupert, Idaho, Risa and Reed Stoddard of Boise, Idaho, Brent Mortensen (deceased), Jeannie and Blake Parkinson of Sandy, Utah, and Trina and Ray Kissel of Amherst, N.Y.; and step-grandfather to 42 grandchildren.

Mark was a man of great determination, ambition, confidence and creativity. He was very loving, kind and generous to all who needed his love and means. He was good to the core! He had a very colorful personality. One never knew what would come out of his mouth.

The family wishes to thank those at Cassia Regional Medical Center for the loving care the angel nurses, doctors, and staff gave to Mark during his last days. Mark loved them too.
