Mathews of Logan, NY survived to adulthood only because he left home to serve during the Civil War. Sylvester was stationed at Harpers Ferry, WV. Sylvester returned home after discharge to find that his brothers and sisters died from Diphtheria. Sylvester's first child (Nora) with wife Emma Peterson also died as a baby.
