Harold Zinzer

August 19, 1924 — October 13, 2012

Harold was born in Chicago on Aug. 19, 1924 and passed away Oct. 13, 2012 at the Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver.

He was the fourth of six children born to Laura Belle Dickinson Zinzer Wright. The Zinzer family moved to Milwaukie in about 1926. He attended elementary, junior high and senior high school in Milwaukie. After leaving high school, Harold entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, completing his Basic Training at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Mo. He then transferred to Lincoln, Neb. to attend Airplane Mechanics School, followed by an assignment to Wendover Air Base, in Utah, where a portion of the Atomic Bomb was developed and the Enola Gay temporarily located. Harold was a heavy duty equipment operator and delivered war materials by semi truck and trailer to installations in the western U.S. He was honorably discharged in 1946 at Ft. Lewis.

Harold returned to Milwaukie in 1947 and was employed as manager of The Bomber service station. In 1948, Harold started his career as a firefighter, joining the Oak Lodge Fire District as a volunteer. In 1950 he was hired as a paid firefighter, moving up the ranks serving as district Fire Chief from 1960 until 1976 when a severe heart attack ended his career.

Harold married his wife, Jean, in 1950. In 1953, they embarked on a seven year journey to build the house they lived in over four decades raising three children. Harold and Jean enjoyed traveling and after retirement, they spent most of their winters in the Southwest. He loved golfing and do-it-yourself projects including restoring several vehicles, tinkering with and repairing mechanical and electrical objects. Other hobbies included motor home travel, motorcycles, fishing and boating. Harold and Jean traveled approximately 100,000 miles on their motorcycles and embarked upon a cross country motor home adventure. Many summer days were spent with friends and family picnicking and water skiing on the Willamette River. Harold and Jean sold their home in 2004 moving to Vineyard Place where they made many new friends while maintaining old friendships.

Jean passed away near the end of 2006. Harold has enjoyed his 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and is also survived by sister, Dorothy; brother, Bob; and his three children. Harold's sense of humor remained until the end and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Harold will be interred at Willamette National Cemetery and according to his wishes, only immediate family will attend the service. Donations may be sent in his name to a charity of your choice.
