Francis (Stodgil-) Sturgill is the son of James Sturgill and Ann Calloway. He was born 1755 in Orange (now Greene) Co. VA. He died 1807 in Alleghany County, North Carolina. Burial in Sturgill Cemetery, near Grassy Creek, Alleghany Co. NC. He married Rebecca Hash in 1776 in Grayson County, VA. She is the daughter of John Hash and Rebecca Anderson. She was born Bet. 1758–1760 in Montgomery County, VA. She died 1841 in Helton Creek, Alleghany County, NC. Burial in Sturgill Cemetery, near Grassy Creek, Alleghany Co. NC.

He was granted 100 a of land in present Grayson Co in 1782 and in 1798 he obtained 500 acres more on two land warrents which were probably for his military service during the Revolutionary War. In 1798 he received three grants from the state of NC which covered the land on New River claimed by his father James. In 1802 he sold the 500 acres in VA and moved up the river to live with and take care of his father who died the following year and was buried in the family cemetery on this farm. Francis and Rebecca were also buried in this cemetery as were two daughters.

This road is closed at the boundary of the New River State Park. Follow the road to the end to find the Old Sturgill Cemetery.
