Married Elizabeth Denham, daughter of David Denham, in Boone County, Missouri in December 1858. Their first home was in Callaway County where they farmed. In this highly Democratic county, at the time of the Civil War, he was registered as a Republican and was an officer of the party. He remained there throughout the War. This fact shows him to be a man of great conviction who acted upon his beliefs.

In 1868 the family moved to Bates County, Missouri, eventually settling in Johnstown. He was in the lumber and saw mill business which would have been highly profitable as all of adjacent Cass County had been burned to the ground by General Order 11 of the Union Army.
