Bertha "Bert" Fay Bonney

September 6, 1922 – September 29, 2011

"…A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies…She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy…Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." Proverbs 31

Bertha Fay Bonney, age 89, claimed her eternal reward with her Lord on Thursday, Sep. 29, 2011, in Albuquerque, NM, after a brief illness. Bertha "Bert" is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Richard C. Bonney, of the couple's home in Montrose, Colorado. She is also survived by many brothers and sisters in Christ who had the privilege of crossing paths with her. Many will dearly miss Bertha's radiant smile and infectious giggle.

Bertha was born to Harry and Lona (Flanagan) Traylor on Sept. 6, 1922 at Fort Smith, Ark. At a young age, the family moved to Ontario, Calif. where Bertha attended school and grew to adulthood. Her independent spirit led her to Portland, Ore. Where she met and married the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Bonney, on Feb. 19, 1949. Dick and Bertha raised a son, Thomas Frederick "Fred" Bonney of Gresham, Ore. Dick was an over-the-road truck driver since the age of sixteen, had served in the Marines and when work was scarce, he and Bertha moved back to California where Dick enlisted in the Air Force. Being an Airman and trucker's wife, Bertha easily adapted to frequent moves to remote locations, finally settling down in Albuquerque. Bertha worked as a meat wrapper for a number of years in a local grocery store. A few years after Dick retired from ABF Trucking in 1989, the couple made their home in Montrose.

Bertha had a heart of compassion and for furthering the Lord's work in the mission field. She loved children and the Lord provided Bertha and Dick many babies of young families to baby-sit and nurture. Throughout the years with the many ministries she volunteered for, young lives were touched, broken hearts were healed and souls won for the Lord's Kingdom. If there was a need, Bertha set to work to meet it whether it be through sewing Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls, teddy bears, aprons and quilts or selling cases of church cookbooks to everyone she would meet. The Bonney's donated all of her handiwork and proceeds went to those in need reaching around the world. Bertha enjoyed nature and flowers. So most days, Dick and Bertha were off touring in search of wildflowers and restaurants with good Mexican food!

Through the years, Bertha was actively involved with Teen Challenge, YWAM (Youth With A Mission), Shalom Ministries, MCC Senior Saints, MCC Cookbook Ministry, Good News Jail & Prison Ministries and the Tuesday Quilters group. She led a spiritually mature life – sharing wisdom far beyond her 89 years. Friends and neighbors were often surprised at her age though since she was quite "young-at-heart".

Dick and Bertha were passionate about spreading God's Word and were devoted supporters of ‘Faith Comes By Hearing", a ministry whose mission is "to record and use heart (native) language Audio Bibles to bring His church together and make disciples from every nation, tribe, language, and people." To learn more visit: Faithcomesbyhearing.com website. At Bertha's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM, Oct. 15, 2011 at Christ's Church of the Valley, 10 Hillcrest Plaza Way, Montrose, Co., with Pastor Tim Maxwell and Pastor Gary Hodges officiating. In lieu of flowers, Bertha would wish that contributions be made to her favorite mission project: Faith Comes By Hearing, 2421 Aztec Road NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107-4224.
