William Wyatt Leavell, a retired Dallas teacher and former president of the Dallas Classroom Teachers Association, died Thursday.

Leavell, 60, was a native and lifelong resident of Dallas.

He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas and received bachelor's and master's degrees from North Texas State University.

He taught at Woodrow Wilson High School from 1952 to 1973, and at North Dallas High School from 1975 to 1983.

Leavell served as president of the Dallas Classroom Teachers Association from 1973 to 1975, and at the time of his death was president of the Dallas Retired Teachers Association.

He was commandant of the ROTC program at Woodrow Wilson High School for 10 years.

He was active in the First United Methodist Church of Dallas, where he served in many offices, and was a member and secretary of the Oak Cliff Lions Club.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Leavell is surived by his wife, Mary Ruth Leavell of Dallas; a daughter, Annell Eppwright of Round Rock, Williamson County; a son, William W. Leavell of Lubbock; his mother, Annie Belle "Patsy' Leavell of Dallas; and five grandchildren.

Services are pending at Sparkman - Hillcrest Northwest Highway Chapel, and burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
