Children of Eliza and Joel:

1. Penelope Caroline Yancey, who married 8 May 1834 in Orange Co., NC Absalom W. McCauley. She was born ca. ca. 1811 in NC and died after 1870 in Tippah Co., MS. Bartlett Yancey, son of her brother, Alfred Yancey and his wife Mildred J. Allen was living with her in 1860. George R. Witt, son of Penelope's sister, Isabella Rebecca Yancey and George R. Witt, Sr. was living with her in 1870.

2. Alfred Yancey, born ca. 1812 in NC and died after 14 May 1862 in Dalton, Whitfield Co., GA while serving in the Civil War. He married Mildred J. Allen 28 May 1842 in Fayette Co., TN. She was the daughter of Nancy Smith and Thomas Allen. Mildred was born ca. 1825, most likely in Anson Co., NC and died before 22 Jan 1858 in Fayette Co., TN. Her father, Thomas Allen left a 22 Jan 1858 Fayette Co., TN will naming his grandchildren, Martha Ann Yancy (sic), Bartlett Yancy, Elizabeth Yancy, Mary May Yancy and Lesia B. Yancy, children of his daughter, Mildred and her husband, Alfred Yancey. Apparently Alfred and Mildred's son, William T. Yancey died before 22 Jan 1858. On his Civil War cards from the National Archives Alfred Yancey's name is always A. Yancey. "He was enrolled at Moscow, Fayette Co., TN by B. H. Holland in Co. K, 38th Tennessee Infantry, CSA on 4 Mar 1862. He was reported absent and at a Hospital in Dalton after 1 May 1862. He died at the Dalton Hospital 14 May 1862." Alfred and Mildred's daughters, Martha Ann (nee Yancey) Newby Crawford (FAG #55298491) and Elizabeth Jane (nee Yancey) Allen - FAG #126544362. Alfred and Mildred's son, Bartlett Yancey - FAG #155034628

3. Mary Ann Yancey, born ca. 1814 in NC and died 25 May 1844 in Fayette Co., TN. She married 11 Feb 1841 in Fayette Co., TN George R. Witt, Sr., and they had a son, William J. Witt who was born Dec 1842 and died 31 Aug 1845 in Fayette Co., TN.

4. Archibald Hagey Yancey, born 27 Feb 1817 in Granville Co., NC and died 2 Sep 1878 in MS. He married Effie Isabella Moore 24 May 1860 in Fayette Co., TN.

5. Ann Elizabeth "Eliza" Yancey, born ca. 1820-1823 in Granville Co., NC, died 4 Jun 1884 in Panola Co., TX and is buried in Gibson Cemetery, Panola Co., TX as A. E. Black - FAG #73782113. This inscription is on her tombstone "Departed this life June 4, 1884 in her 65th yr." Also buried in Gibson Cemetery are step-son, Phillip Gwyn Black and her son, F. Joseph Black. In 1850 Eliza Yancey was living with her widowed father, Joel Yancey in Fayette Co., TN. She married Thomas Stanley Black 6 Mar 1852 in Fayette Co., TN. He was the widower of Elizabeth (nee Gwyn) Black (FAG #10726568), who he married 6 Dec 1840 in Fayette Co. Thomas is buried in Carthage City Cemetery, Carthage, Panola Co., TX - FAG #26046107.

7. Isabella Rebecca Yancey, born ca. 1826 in Granville Co., NC. She married her sister, Mary Ann Yancey's widower, George R. Witt, Sr. 1 Sep 1846 in Fayette Co., TN, and they had a son, George R. In his will, he provided for his son, George's college education. In 1850, Isabella and her son, George R. Witt were also living with her widowed father, Joel Yancey in Fayette Co., TN. On a census dated 1 Jun 1860, Isabella (nee Yancey) Witt and her son, G. R. Whitt, age 12, were enumerated in the household of Nancy Levesque and Fayette Co., TN Deputy Sheriff, William Clampett in Somerville. Isabella was most likely deceased between 1860 and 1870 because her son, George R. Witt, Jr. was living with his maternal aunt, Penelope Caroline (nee Yancey) McCauley in Tippah Co., MS in 1870.

My 3rd great-grandmother, Mary H. (nee Yancey) Graves (FAG # 137277102), born ca. 1805 in Granville Co., NC was a half-sister of Joel Chandler Yancey, son of Phillip Yancey and his wife Sarah Chandler. I'm certain that Mary was the daughter of Phillip Yancey and his last wife, Agatha or Agnes, whose maiden name might have been Benson.
