Simmons, Dr. Sherman E., physician, banker, naturalist and well known and much loved citizen of Norwalk, Ohio finished life's journey on the morning of December 17, 1928, in the 69th year of his age. He was born in Huron county, November 6, 1860, the son of Charles B. and Aura Palmer Simmons. His early education was obtained in public schools and subsequently he became a student at Oberlin College and Ohio Wesleyan University. He studied medicine with Dr. Keith of North Fairfield and was graduated in Cincinati in 1881. After a few years' practice of his profession in N. Fairfield and Milan he moved to Norwalk in 1892, where he continued to reside for the remainder of his life. When a young man Dr. Simmons was united in marriage to Miss Harriet Dimon of Milan, who passed away September 3, 1922. Two children were born to this union, Charles D. Simmons, a well known attorney of Cleveland, and Mary Simmons who died in childhood. On January 9, 1924, Dr. Simmons married Miss Grace Kingsbury of Norwalk, who survived him. He was also survived by two granddaughters, Mary Catherine Simmons aged eight and Anne Simmons aged two, both of Cleveland. At the time of his death Dr. Simmons was president and a director of the Citizens National Bank. Early in life he became a member of the Disciple church. Fraternally he was identified with the Masons, the Elks and the Maccabees. He also held memberships in the State and National Homeopathic Societies, and was a Life Member and Trustee of The Firelands Historical Society. The death of Dr. Simmons removed from the community a kindly and skilled physician who during his long ministry to the wants of the suffering humanity had made an unusually wide acquaintance throughout the county. As a business man he was able and honest; as a companion charming and delightful on account of his genial nature and sincere sympathy. But especially will he be remembered because of his nature study and love of the great out-doors. He could identify hundreds of interesting birds, inscects, reptiles and plants and all of God's creatures were beloved by him. Whereas in his younger days in the open with his rod and gun and fine bird dogs, in his later years on account of his interest in the study of birds and animals he ceased to hunt and contributed much toward the preservation of wild life. Funeral services were conducted by Revs. C.H. Gross and W.H. Shields and interment was made in Woodlawn cemetery. From "The Firelands Pioneer"
