Hawkins was the fourth son of Lt. Hawkins Hart and Abigail Hall Hart originally of Wallingford, CT and later of Barkhamsted Hollow, to which he moved with his parents in 1789. He was a carpenter and joiner by trade. He married Lois Slade on December 5, 1805, and they has eleven children: Chester (7/16/1806), Rebecca (3/6/1808 - 4/1842), Betsey (5/6/1810 - 2/6/1822), William Henry Harrison (8/28/1812 - 6/24/1864 at the Battle of St. Mary's Church), Fanny (11/10/1814 - 1/3/1816), Fanny Amilla (1/2/1816 - 1/1840), Sarah Belle Hart Chamberlain (1/24/1818 - 12/21/1904 ), Olive (9/2/1820 - 2/5/1822), Abner S. (7/15/1823), Lois (9/14/1825 - 12/1825), and Hannah Amanda Hart Douglas (7/8/1827).
