A Soldiers Soldier, Ernie was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and was raised on the family's rural farm in Mt. Olive, Mississippi. He once spoke of his career as a job; he thought was the right thing to do at the time. He hoped what he did help make a difference. He believed that all Americans should raise the flag proudly everyday and he did so till his passing. His greatest achievement and honor was the love of being a good buddy, a Soldier.

The unit he commanded in Korea was in the 38th, not 3rd Infantry Regiment.
He commanded two division in Vietnam. He also commanded the 23rd Infantry (AMERICAL) Division in 1970.
I don't know where he passed but there is no town in Mississippi named "Henderson" that I can find. Perhaps it is "Henderson Point" on the coast near Bay St Louis?
