His mother died in childbirth when he was 4. He and his brother were sent to live with his mother's family (John F Jordan, in the same county). He left as a teenager but stayed in contact with his half-sister Lucy Beale Fuller.
The Beale family home and cemetery still exist in Boykins, Virginia in 2023.

He was a retired lumberman and farmer.
