Son of John Prentiss and Anne Poe. Neilson "Net" Poe played football as a halfback for Princeton University from 1882 to 1901. He served in the United States Army in the infantry with the rank of Lieutenant . Neilson was awarded the French War Cross and the Distinguished Service Award for his actions during the Second Battle of the Marne. After the war he returned to Princeton and served as assistant coach for the university's football team until his death in 1963
