Lawyer and Judge of the Orphan's Court of Baltimore City ,Maryland. He was also director of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal as well as director of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad for a short time. Before these ventures Neilson Poe also was editor of the Frederick Examiner and Federal Gazette. As well as proprietor of the Baltimore Chronicle.
Neilson was also cousin of the writer Edgar Allan Poe and his wife Josephine E.Clemm was half sister of Edgar's wife Virginia Eliza Clemm. Neilson figured greatly in the mysterious last days of Edgar Allan Poe and upon Edgar's death Neilson paid for Edgar's hearse,coffin and an Italian marble headston,which was destroyed in an accident when transporting to the cemetery. Neilson is father to John Prentiss Poe and is grandfather to the six Poe brothers who played football at Princeton University between 1882 and 1903
