Son of Asa H. Hamblin and wife Diannah (nee Wilson) Hamblin. John was father to four children, one infant that died, Clarinda Hamblin (died after 6 months of age), Conrad Miller Hamblin, and Frank Houston Hamblin. Husband to Catharine Miller.

Enumerated in 1860 US census as John Hamlin, District 2, Pulaski, Kentucky.

Enumerated in 1870 US census as John T. Hamblem, Black, Posey, Indiana.

Marriage license entered in Volume 010 from White County, Illinois depicts John C. Hamblin and Catharine Miller married on July 2, 1876, at the home of John B. Grow (his brother-in-law) in Emma, White, Illinois.

Two White County Illinois deeds from 1878 indicate his name was John S. Hamblin. The deeds indicate John and his wife Catherine were in partnership with his father Asa and stepmother on this tract of land north of Rising Sun, in White County, IL.

Enumerated in 1880 US census as John C. Hamlin, Emma, White, Illinois, next door to his father Asa.

Name on original headstone depicts John S. Hamblin. This author assumes that the "T" middle initial in the 1870 census is incorrect and that his middle name was something such as Cyrus which could possibly explain the "C" and the "S" as middle initials. Other possible middle names could be Silas or Siler, names which are often found in Hamblin family lineage in East Kentucky where he was born. Other headstone inscription errors have been detected within this cemetery. The birth year of 1855 is directly in the middle of the crack, and could almost be as easily interpreted as 1854. Records provided by the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville, Tennessee indicate a birth year of 1854 as well. Tyner's book entitled "Our People and Where They Rest" indicates the birth year of 1854 and was recorded before the stone cracked.

The stone is broken into two pieces and no longer stands in the base but instead lies on the ground. It has been repaired but the repair did not hold. Grass covered it, weeds concealed it, so it was almost passed by. It was found and cleaned by this author after removing the weeds; 2 Oct 2001. John is buried next to his nephew Roscoe Howell.

The Hamblin family departed the Knox/Whitley County area of Kentucky about 1858 for Missouri, They settled briefly near Somerset, Kentucky, then in Posey County, Indiana, and next White County, Illinois. About 1881 some of them went south to Hackett, Arkansas and then into Indian Territory about 1883 where they lived in the area previously known as Kully Chaha (near what is now the Hill community) before moving westward toward Talihina, Bokoshe and Fanshawe.

John's son Conrad lived in Higgins and Hartshorne, OK and is buried in McAlester, Oklahoma.

John's son Frank lived in Haileyvile, Arch, Dow and Hartshorne, OK, before moving to Riverside, California where he died.

On October 17, 2013 a new granite headstone was placed here as well by James Hamblin (Great-great-grandson), searching his information since 1978. Dates engraved were based off of the best information available at that time.

Inscription

In memory of John S. Hamblin born in Kentucky March 5, 1854, died Jan 16, 1886.

I know his face is hid, Under the coffin lid. Closed are his eyes, Cold his forehead lay. My hand that marble felt, Over it in prayer I knelt. My heart whispers he is not here.
