Dora L. Crites, age 85, of Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at Freeman Hospital, following an illness.

Dora was born on Feb. 18, 1927, in Olden, Mo., the daughter of the late Ed and Grace (Brower) Carver. She graduated from West Plains High School and received a teaching degree at Pittsburg State University.

She married Donald L. Crites on Aug. 17, 1950. They moved to Joplin in 1956, where they raised two children.

Dora taught school for 40 years, she was a fifth and sixth grade teacher for Joplin R-8, retiring in 1985. She was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church where she served as deacon. She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association and the Jasper County Democrats. She enjoyed jewelry making and fashion. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family especially her two granddaughters.

Dora was preceded in death by her husband, Don Crites in 2007. She was also preceded in death by seven sisters.

Dora is survived by her children, a son, Don Crites Jr. and wife, Kathy, Joplin; and daughter, Dianne Lewis and husband, Michael, Naples, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Sarah Crites and Camille Lewis.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, of Joplin, 20th and Virginia. Rev. Rodney Peters and Rev. Brock Watson will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Bethany Presbyterian Church or West Central Elementary School in care of the mortuary.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
