William Barber passed away at his home east of Nashua Monday night at 7:05. Mr. Barber had been failing in health for some time past, but for the past three weeks had been failing rapidly. His death was due to a general breaking down of the system.
William Hiram Barber was born in Hillsdale County, Michigan, Aug. 2, 1835. At the age of sixteen he came to Belvidere, Ill and there he was married to Mercy L. Herrington, May 2, 1860, who preceded him to the other shore Dec. 27, 1901.
He enlisted in the Army in the War of the Rebellion, and served until the expiration of the war. He was with Sherman on his march to sea, and was at Washington at the time of the Grand Review. After the war he returned to Belvidere and in 1872 he came to Nashua, Iowa, settling upon a farm in Richland Township where he spent the remainder of his life, with the exception of three years spent back in Illinois.
He leaves to mourn his death two sons, Harley and Roy, of Nashua; also one sister, Mrs. Ercebrack of Chicago; two half-sisters, Mrs. LeBrant of Malta, Ill. and Mrs. Losee, of Bremer County; and one half-brother, Frank Jones, of Talapoosa, Ga.
The deceased lived many years in the vicinity whre he passed away, and was held in high esteem by his friends and neighbors.
The funeral will be held in the M. E. Church at Republic at 10:30 o'clock this morning, under the auspices of the G.A. R., and the remains will be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery.
