Pvt John Benton, Jr


Died at 3:30 yesterday afternoon at his home, 2910 Eighth avenue from cirrhosis of liver. He was born at Martha Furnace, this county, April 22, 1844, and had been a resident of this city for thirty-eight years. He was a puddler in the Altoona iron works. He entered the Union army on August 26, 1864, and served to the close of the struggle in company C, 205th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A wife [Mary Henderson Benton] and seven children survive: Mrs. Bertha Coho, Thomas, Robert, Andrew, Elizabeth, Mrs. Margaret Geiss and Francis, all of this city. The funeral will be held on Friday morning, with mass at St. Patrick's Catholic church at Newry, and interment at that place.
