Son of Joseph Shaler & Isabella (Greer) Benham. Married Elizabeth Cora 'Betty' Marbury 1855. They had 1 son Calhour DeWitt Benham Jr. who died in childhood. Served in the Confederate Army, attaining the rank of Major in the Army of Tennessee. Calhoun later became an attorney.
