Sister Syra Whitman, age 88, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity and currently residing at A Peace Place for Children in Williamsburg, Ky., died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at Jellico Community Hospital, Jellico, Tenn.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Holy Family Convent Chapel. Rev. DePaul Sobotka O.F.M. will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial with burial at Holy Family Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The former Florence Whitman was born May 9, 1909, in Rhinelander, Wis., daughter of the late Henry Whitman and Anna Cihanski. She entered the Convent in 1924 and professed her vows in 1928. Sister Syra earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Norbert College, DePere, Wis., and a Master of Education Degree from Loyola University, Chicago, Ill. Sister Syra served as an elementary school teacher at St. Joseph, Oneida, St. Mary, Kaukauna, St. Ann, New Holstein, St. Joseph, Rice Lake, St. Joseph, Sturgeon Bay, Wis., St. Nicholas, Zanesville, Ohio, St.
Willibrord, Chicago, Ill. For nearly 30 years, she served as a teacher of the deaf through Catholic Charities of Chicago and St. Francis de Paul Elementary, St. Mary of Perpetual Help, Leo High School and as a principal of Marian South at Most Holy Redeemer, Chicago, Ill. Since her retirement from active ministry in the field of education, she has been caring for children at A Peace Place for Children in Williamsburg, Ky. She is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.
Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; one sister and brother-in-law; Nellie and Ronald Lewis, Rhinelander, Wis.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, March 13, 1998, at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at the Holy Family Convent Chapel.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home is assisting with funeral arrangements.

Sister M. Syra Specializes in Work with Deaf
Outstanding work in the fiend of deaf education is being accomplished by
Sister Mr. Syra, a native of Rhinelander. Sr. M. Syra, the daughter of the
late Henry and Anna Whitman, attended St. Mary's School, the McCord School
and Rhinelander High School. She entered the Holy Family Convent in
Manitowoc
in 1924.
Two years later, she was received into the order and became a Franciscan
Sister
of Christian Charity. She attended Holy Family college of Manitowoc and St.
Norbert's College, West DePere where she received her bachelor of arts
degree.
Her masters in education was obtained at Loyola University, Chicago, Ill.
Sister Syra has been teaching deaf children in the archdiocesan schools of
Chicago for the past five years. This summer she was instructor in a
training
course for teachers of the deaf at Loyola. Prior to her work with the
deaf she
taught in various schools of Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan. Sister Syra
is the
sister of Mrs. Ronald (Nellie) Lewis, 803 Randell Ave., James Whitman,
Woodruff
and of the late Eugene (Ike) Whitman. She will be visiting her sister
and brother
August 23 and 24 before continuing instruction in St. Francis DePaul
School for
the Deaf where she is principal.
