Born Mary Cox in Liverpool, she was the first wife of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr (real name Richard Starkey). It's unknown when or how she acquired Maureen. She was a regular from Ringo's days at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. On a dare from her friends one night, she made her way backstage at a Beatles concert and first kissed Paul McCartney. When Ringo, who she really liked, came out, she kissed him, too. He reportedly didn't take notice of her until a few months later when they discovered they had things in common (mainly that she was a hairdresser working in a salon and he wanted to open up a string of hair salons). After enduring months of separation during the initial hysteria of Beatlemania (and Ringo's bout with tonsillitis that forced him to miss most of the band's 1964 world tour), Ringo and Maureen were married on February 11, 1965 at Caxton Register Hall, Westminster, London with Brian Epstein as best man. John and Cynthia Lennon also attended the ceremony. The marriage produced three children: sons Zak and Jason and daughter Lee. After the Beatles breakup in 1970, Ringo's reported alcoholism and increasing adultery put a serious strain on the marriage and they divorced on July 17, 1975. In the 1980s, Maureen began a relationship with Isaac Tigrett, one of the founders of the Hard Rock Cafe chain and the current owner of the House of Blues in L.A. She gave birth to a daughter, Augusta, in 1987 and they married on May 27, 1989. During the opening of the House of Blues, Maureen fainted. What was initially thought to be anemia turned out to be a form of leukemia. Even with bone marrow donated by her son Zak, Maureen died from a fungal infection from the transplant in a Seattle hospital. Ringo and their three children were with her when she died.
