Minden/Hortman, LA - Rod Hortman, 82 of Minden/Hortman, Louisiana, went home to be with his heavenly father on July 30, 2013 at his home in Minden after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held where he and his family have been lifelong members for over 100 years on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, 16835 Hwy 371, Minden, Louisiana, with interment to follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday evening August 1, 2013 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden, LA from 5 until 7:30 p.m. for family and friends. Jim Kennedy, Pastor of Pleasant Valley Church will officiate. Rod was born June 12, 1931 on the Hortman farm to Jacob C. and Linna Camp Hortman. He was born the 4th child of six.
Rod went to grade school at Cotton Valley High School and then transferred to Springhill High School where he was part of the graduating class of 1948. Rod was voted most handsome guy in school that year. Rod worked on his family's farm until he enlisted in the military in 1951. He served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps and in the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon Medic from 1951 to 1955. He loved to tell stories about where he had visited during his time in the military, from South Africa, England, and Greenland. He also told people when he went to Greenland that he never got to see it, due to it being dark half of the year.
Mr. Hortman was jack-of-all-trades. After being discharged from the military, his brother Collin and he opened up Hortman Ambulance Service. Their ambulance service was the only service in Webster Parish at that time. Mr. Hortman was well known for having his Liquor Stores in Dixie Inn for many years. He also served on the town council of the Village of Dixie Inn in the early 1990's. If you knew Rod, you knew that he was always doing something with his life. After semi retiring in 2008, he began to sell produce on the side of the road out of his van, from watermelons, grapefruits, oranges, apples, and sweet potatoes.
Rod is survived by his wife of 29 years, Martha Sue. Daughter, Rhonda Hortman Connor of Shreveport, and son, James Rodney, Jr. of Minden. Grandchildren, Kaitlyn Connor Jeansonne and husband Jeremey of Shreveport, Matthew Hortman and wife Samantha of St. Augustine, Florida, Michael Connor of Shreveport, and Kimberly Hortman of Minden. Great-grandchildren are Jayden Beck of Minden, Ellie Grace Jeansonne of Shreveport, and McKenzie Hortman of St. Augustine, Florida. Sister, Gloria Hortman Morgan and husband Niven of Shreveport, and many nieces and nephews.
Rod was preceded in death by both his parents, brothers, Jacob Jr., Collin Camp, Charles Loye, and Don Carol and nephew John Loye.
Honoring the life of Mr. Hortman, as pallbearers will be Matthew Hortman, Michael Connor, Charles Hortman, Bill Hoffess, George Hortman, and Jimmy "Dog Man" Stovall.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Hoffess, Henry Bounds, B.G. Hester, and the Heehaw Gang at Hamburger Happiness.
