Article in the Napanee Beaver April 14, 1954, pg. 1:
"Sunday Fatality - Mrs. F.E. VanLuven Dies In Fire:
Mrs. F. E. VanLuven, 87, died in a fire here Sunday morning, which gutted the rear portion of her home on John St.
The fire was noticed about 10 minutes before seven o'clock by a neighbor, E. A. Powell, who called firemen. The blaze apparently started from the oven of an electric stove, which was still on when firemen arrived. The late Mrs. VanLuven had been living alone in the kitchen part of the large house and is believed to have been sleeping in a chair when she realized the room was on fire. The spot where she had been sitting was badly burned, even through the floor, and her body was found on the other side of the room. Dr. A.R.E. Mounce, of Newburgh, coroner, was called and it is believed she died of suffocation from smoke fumes.
Firemen battled the blaze for over an hour and confined it to the rear part of the house. Police said that Mrs. VanLuven had been in poor health for about two weeks and had had something(sic) staying with her until Saturday night. She had been a resident of Napanee since her marriage, 60 years ago, to Frank E. VanLuven, who died 30 years ago.
Born at Odessa, the late Mrs. VanLuven was the former Jane Elizabeth Wright, daughter of the late Daniel Wright, and his wife, the former Emily Denyes. Her husband had operated a coal business here until his death, after which she continued to run the business for about five years before selling to Harry W. Vine, who still operates it.
An only brother, Ernest A. Wright, lives at Odessa, and a daughter, Mrs. John Wilbur Jenkins (Betty), lives in Arlington, Virginia."
