She attended a Burlingame rural school, and graduated from Burlingame High School in 1941. She graduated from a Topeka Business College, and her first job was as the personal secretary for Alfred Landon.
Gertrude married Kenneth Henderson, August 10, 1943, at Holton, Kansas. They lived on the family farm south of Harveyville, where she was a homemaker.
She worked for an Osage City nursing home for a short time, and then for the First National Bank of Harveyville, where she retired. She later worked as a CNA for Aldersgate Village, Topeka, for ten years.
She was a member of the Harveyville United Methodist Church, and several bridge clubs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, August 11, 1980, a son, Kenneth Eugene Henderson Jr., who died in infancy, a son-in-law Patrick Patton, September 11, 1998, a brother, Russell Rendell and a sister, Mildred Watson.
Survivors include a son, Jay Henderson, Harveyville, KS; two daughters, Jeannie Patton, Topeka, KS, and Judy (Stuart) Bailey, Tecumseh, KS; four grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012, in Wilmington Cemetery - south of Harveyville on Miller Road, east on Wilmington Road to the cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rebuilding Fund for the Harveyville United Methodist Church that was destroyed by the Harveyville Tornado, and sent in care of Carey Funeral Home, P.O.
