The son of Russian immigrants Albert and Pauline Witkin, and the brother of Bernard E. Witkin (California's criminal law guru), Mrs. Minnie Ingraham and Mrs. Alice V. Borden. A valedictorian for his Class of 1917, Polytechnic High School in San Francisco. An honor graduate of the College of Civil Engineering, U.C., Berkeley, 1921. Member: Registered Civil Engineer, State of Calif.; American Assoc. for Advancement of Science; American Concrete Institute; Associated General Contractors of America. San Francisco engineer, 1916-23. From 1924 to 1932, Zara was a chief engineer for the City of Los Angeles and won fame as a designer of the Hollywood Bowl. Chosen by the Soviet government, he was a chief consultant for all Soviet building projects in 1932-34. Consultant for prefabricated housing, design and construction, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York; president of Fabricated Houses Inc. Book author of "An American Engineer in Stalin's Russia - the Memoirs of Zara Witkin, 1932-1934." A close friend of actor Paul Muni.

As of the year 2020, Zara's burial site is still unknown since I got the word from a FAG volunteer who said he could not find it at that cemetery.
