Edward (DAR Patriot A210666) was born in the colony of Pennsylvania about 1737 to Thomas and Martha Thatcher Long. He married Jane S. Jones 18 Jan 1762 in Augusta county, Virginia where they began their family. They relocated to Loudoun county about 1767 where the rest of their first eight children were born.
Edward and Jane lived in Loudoun County, Virginia until about 1776 when they moved back to Pennsylvania where their son, Isaac, was born.
During the Revolutionary War, Edward served as a private in Capt Chrystie's Co, 3rd PA Regt under Col. Craig. About the time of going into quarters at Valley Forge, Edward was wounded in the head, from the effects of which he never fully recovered. When the war was over he seemed to still have a dread of freezing, to avoid which he would carry in huge logs, stumps, and in fact anything to make a hot fire, then he would sit near and enjoy the warmth which to others present was unbearable.
After the war Edward and Jane moved to Pittsylvania county, Virginia on the forks of Strawberry Creek where the remainder of their children were born.
They were the parents of twelve children:
Thomas c. 1762- (married Rachel Cox)
Rachel c. 1764 (married John Gregg)
William c. 1765 (married Rachel Pruitt)
James 1767-1828 (married Priscilla Lasswell, Sarah Miller)
Nancy 1768-1839 (married William C. Maples)
Hannah c. 1770- (married Reuben Herndon)
George 1771-1849 (married Elizabeth Maples)
(This George proved by DNA matching)
Moses c. 1772- (married Elizabeth)
Isaac 1777-1856 (married Nancy Bolton)
Jane c. 1781- (married William Hammack, Jonathan Carrier)
Edward 1785-1849 (married Mildred Bolton)
Elizabeth c. 1786- (married William Herndon)
John E Long 1755-1828 (married Delilah Elliott) is a documented child of Edward apparently by a previous marriage
Edward died about 18 Aug 1806. His will is recorded in Pittsylvania county and was proved 20 Aug 1806. Family tradition says he and Jane are buried near their home on Strawberry creek.
(Marriage source: Court records of Augusta county)
(The Western Evangelist, Greenville, IL., Vol. 9, No. 2, July 1856, p 62 states that Rev. George Long was a son of Edward and Jane Jones Long and indicates he lived in Tennessee but gives no location)
