Captain A.W. Sirginson was born in Bellingham, Wash. July 16, 1917. He was the second born of three children and was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Charlotte and Adair. He attended Long Beach High School and then New York University, New York City. He graduated and joined the midshipman class at Great Lakes, Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill. In 1942 he met Bertha, soon to be his wife, and had four children, William , Richard, Dorothy and Elizabeth.
During WWII he was given command of three ships and was one of the few supply corps officers that held command at sea during the war in the Pacific. Over the years he was promoted from Ensign to Lt. Cdr. At the U.S. Naval Academy, while as an instructor, he was promoted to Commander at Annapolis Maryland. He was promoted to Captain while in San Diego, Calif. He served in the Pacific Theater, the Pentagon, and the Defense Supply Agency along with various other assignments. He was a decorated Naval Officer throughout his career.
In his final years he spent time with his children and more recently in Greenville. He will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, of 63 years, Bertha, who proceeded him in death in 2005. The family will miss this wonderful father of four, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, friend of many and the people he came to know over the years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell has the arrangements.
