Ruth was born on a farm outside of St. Francis and was the 5th of Peter and Margaret (Croissant) Zimbelman's six children.
As a child of Russian-German immigrants, she grew up speaking German at home. She attended a one-room school house through the 8th grade, and then graduated from St. Francis High School in 1941. After high school she worked at the J.C. Penney store in St. Francis, and later at the Cheyenne County State Bank.
She married Clarence Zimbelman on February 20, 1946 and because of Clarence's career with the U.S. Government, they made their home in a number of locations in Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado over the course of their 66 years of married life.
Ruth was a devoted wife and mother, and was passionate about installing her moral values of hard work and integrity in her two daughters. In 1970 she returned to the workforce as a teller at the Republic National Bank in Pueblo, Colorado. She worked there for 17 years, and had a well-deserved reputation for being a loyal and dedicated employee.
In their later years, Ruth and Clarence enjoyed travel, gardening, and spending time with family. These were years that were also marked by the most challenging event of their married life - the long illness and eventual death of the daughter Joan. In spite of her sadness and loss, and in a living testament to optimism and resilience, she took great joy in her grandchildren. Ruth was generous beyond measure to them, and loved more than anything to welcome them to her home in Longmont, Colorado for delicious home-cooked meals and overnight visits.
Ruth died peacefully at the age of 90 at the Frasier Meadows Retirement Community in Boulder, Colorado. Memorial services on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at the Philips Chapel at Frasier Meadows.
