Dianah Honor Gunter was the common-law wife of Joshua Gosnell. Her name is recorded as Dianah in the 1870 census, and other census name her as "Onor." We are almost certain the census taker did not know how to spell her middle name. Some people call her "Hannah."

She had at least 8 children by Joshua Gosnell: Charles, Tabitha, Lucinda, James, Elender, Hester, Eliza, and Jason. A girl named Margaret (who later married John Henry Ray) was born in 1858, approximately 15 years after the youngest child, Jason. On her death certificate (1939), she is said to belong to Joshua and Onor Gosnell. However, she was living with Lucinda, Elender, Onor, and other family members at in 1870. She was listed after Lucinda in the 1870 census. I believe she was Lucinda's daughter, and Joshua and Onor probably had mighty hands in her rearing.

I would love to know where Onor was buried. She appears to have lived the last few years of her life in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Joshua Gosnell, the father of her children, was buried in the Gosnell Cemetery in Madison County, as was Elizabeth Bowers, his legal wife. Perhaps Onor was laid to rest near the father of her children, or perhaps she reposes elsewhere. Wherever she is, I would love to honor her, as she was my 3rd great-grandmother. Because my grandfather, Dave Gunter, married his 2nd cousin, Amanda Gosnell, Elizabeth Delila Bowers, is also my 3rd great grandmother. They were not perfect people, but they were my ancestors, and I respect and love all of them.
