BORN and DIED in - Vespra Township, Simcoe County, Ontario -

MY GREAT-GRANDMOTHER - Martha was not blessed with the means and privlieges of grace and education, but she was brought to seek the Saviour while young. Her parents were among the first who settled on the Penetanguishene Road, north of Barrie, when all was a wilderness, about the year 1819, no schools, no churches, very few opportunities of hearing the word of God.

Martha married James Beeton in 1846 at Vespra Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada, and had eight children. James and Martha lived a mile west of # 93 Highway at Craighurst. This farm included a large stand of original hard maple trees, which were tapped for syrup each spring. James continued to write poetry and had poems published in the Magnet News Paper, in Barrie. Martha was a very quiet woman - very little to say to anyone - a woman of an even temper, so much so that she seemed to keep her mind evenly balanced - that we hardly ever saw her out of temper - some might seem to have a greater zeal of God, and move to say about their experience - she lived the life of a Christian woman so that when she came to be placed on a death bed, she said, "I am ready and willing to die and go to Jesus" - she looked to her now bereaved partner and said, "I hope the Lord will bless thee for all thy trouble - and I hope you will be good to the children". She seemed then to have done with the world, she soon fell asleep in Jesus.

- written by her husband - James Beeton (My great-grandfather) - Ron C. Johnston. Martha died January 24, 1873, at 48 years, 9 months of age, at Vespra Township, Simcoe County, and was buried in the Craighurst Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Medonte Township, Simcoe County. James survived her loss for only 8 months before his own death, September 24, 1873, at 68 years, and was buried with her.

A letter from Emily (181 Olive Avenue, Willowdale, Ontario) in 1968 to Aunt Eddie, says she received word that Martha Gough "was converted to Presbyterian, having been a member of a Family of Infidels".
