Joseph Henry Merritt was named after both of his grandfathers. He was born on Tuesday, 16 Mar 1876 in Westmoreland; Rock Creek Twp., Pottawatomie County, Kansas to William Arch Sr & Adocia A "Josie" (Walden) Merritt.

In early 1880 he & his family were living in Rock Creek Twp., Pottawatomie County, Kansas but by October of that year the harsh weather of drought, winds & damage to crops his father sold their farm & the family moved back East. They stopped & stayed for unknown period of time in Leavenworth, Kansas before taking a train back to Indiana. They resided in Reelsville, Putnam County, Indiana until 1889 before moving to West Terre Haute (Macksville), Vigo County, Indiana. In 1889 they were boarders of 644 Ohio, West Terre Haute. Joseph married Nellie Barrett Wednesday, 15 Jun 1904 in Vigo County, Indiana with JOP Basil Brown officiating.

With a 4th grade education Joseph worked various odd jobs; Teamster for PC Mace Saw Mill, carpenter and a laborer & grade operator for the Vigo County Highway Department. He & Nellie lived their entire married life in Vigo County, Indiana on land & on water between West Terre Haute & Terre Haute; always close to family. Joseph was a hard worker; enjoying fishing & playing horse shoes. For several years they lived on a house boat on the Wabash River. Joseph died of cancer on Friday, 27 Sept 1941.

Terre Haute Tribune – Saturday, 28 Sept 1941 – Joseph Henry Merritt, 65 years old, died at 12:25 o’clock Friday afternoon at the residence, 1105 Harding Avenue. He is survived by the widow, Nellie; two sons, Joseph Jr. and Andrew J., both of Terre Haute; two daughters, Miss Gertrude Merritt and Mrs Sarah Johnson, both of Terre Haute, and one sister, Mrs Serrilda E Waldon, of West Terre Haute. The body was taken to the Gillis Memory Chapel and was returned to the residence Saturday afternoon, from where funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon. Burial will be made in Bethesda Cemetery.
