Jacob Berg was born in Bredebygden, Guldbrandlen, Norway, on August 18, 1841, his parents being Iva and Thora Berg. There were fourteen children in the family, ten brothers and four sisters; four living in Norway, and Iver and Marit Berg living south-east of Bryant. Most of his childhood was spent in Norway and at the age of twenty-seven years he was united in marriage to Marit Olsen Varp-Haugen, which occurred in 1868. In the year of 1878 he came to American and went as far west as Tracy, Minn., staying there a short time, then leaving with his family for Volga, this state, spending four years in that vicinity. In the year 1882, he filed on and located on his homestead east of Bryant, on which he resided up to a few months before his death. The following children were born: Mrs. Chas. Bork (deceased); Mrs. Ole Rovang, Bryant, S. D., Iver Berg, Columbus, N. D., Ole Berg, Seattle, Wash., Anton Berg, Mohall, N.D., Paul Berg (deceased).

Mr. Berg had been in the best of spirits the fore part of the winter, but during the past few weeks he failed in health, and his death occurred on February 18th, at the age of 73 years and 6 months. He leaves to hourn his loss, his wife; one daughter and three sons; five brothers and two sisters.

The funeral services were held at the Berg home in Bryant, at twelve o'clock noon, and at the Garfield Lutheran Church at two o'clock in the afternoon on February 23rd. Rev. E. S. Eidesvik preached the funeral sermon and interment took place in the Garfield Lutheran Churchyard.
