Sister Mary Benedict Vas, age 91, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of
Christian Charity, died on Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Holy Family Convent,
Manitowoc.
The former Helen Vas was born on Sept. 25, 1915, in Milwaukee, daughter of
the late Joseph and Victoria (Polk) Vas. She entered the convent in 1930
and professed her vows in 1934. Sister Mary Benedict earned a Bachelor of
Arts degree from Holy Family College, Manitowoc. Sister Mary Benedict served
as an elementary teacher at St. John, Antigo; St. Mary, Clarks Mills; St.
Therese, Appleton; Holy Innocents, Sacred Heart and St. Boniface, all of
Manitowoc; St. Mary, Rhinelander; St. Francis, Hollandtown; St. Mary, Algoma;
Holy Redeemer, Two Rivers; St. Paul, Wrightstown; St. Edward, Mackville; Holy
Family, Lindsay, Neb.; and St. Francis Xavier, Petoskey, Mich. She also served
as a homemaker at St. Pius X, Appleton; teacher aide and staff member in the
audio visual department at Silver Lake College; librarian at St. John, Komatke,
Ariz. and St. Anne, Francis Creek. After retiring from active ministry, she
performed various tasks at Ozanam Home, New Berlin, and St. Francis Convent,
Manitowoc. She is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2007, at the
Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian
Burial will be the Rev. Samuel D. Jadin, O. Praem, with burial at Holy Family
Convent Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The family will greet relatives and friends at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc,
from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2007. A prayer service will be held at
7 p.m. at Holy Family Convent Chapel, Manitowoc.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, is assisting the
family with funeral arrangements.
