SANFORD – Donald B. Treadwell, 91, of 7 Pearl St., died Monday at his daughter's home in Portland after a lengthy illness.

He was born June 4, 1903, in Acton, the son of Charles and Luella Miller Treadwell, and attended Acton and South Portland schools.

Over the years, Mr. Treadwell was employed by the Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Pioneer Plastics, retiring about 30 years ago.

He had a talent for dowsing and performed the service for many people including author Kenneth Roberts, best known for his work "Northwest Passage". Roberts was so impressed by Mr. Treadwell's dowsing talent the author mentioned him in a short story collection, "The Kenneth Roberts Reader".

Mr. Treadwell was a 60-plus year member and past noble grand of 100F Lodge in Sanford and Kennebunk. He owned a summer camp on Mousam Lake and liked to hunt and fish there.

His wife, Doris Hersom Treadwell, died in 1983.

Survivors include a daughter Joann Groff of Portland, two grandsons, a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
