Hugh McGibeny was one of 13 children born to James McGibeney and Hannah Sterritt. His family performed as "The McGibeny Family: The Largest Musical Family in the World." Within the group, Hugh was charged with playing the drum and brass instruments but his passion was the violin. After marrying Grace L. Holman, Hugh left the group and became a teacher in Richmond Indiana. After two years he became concert master and first violinist for the first Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Later he became head of the Jordan Conservatory violin department.
