Enlisted 28 Jun 1916. Trained at Camp Cody, Deming, NM. Served as a cook during World War I in Company K, 134th Infantry Regiment, 67th Infantry Brigade, 34th Infantry Division, US Army. Discharged 25 Aug 1919. Mitochondrial DNA testing of a direct maternal-line descendant of Alexander's maternal aunt Clemency (Kelly) Nelson indicates that his mtDNA haplogroup was H49a, with many matches in Scandinavia.
