FLORENCE LEWIS MAY age 88 of 944 Rte 152, Elmira, NY formerly of 200 E. 33rd St., New York, NY Tuesday, September 6, 1988 at Arnot Ogden Memorial Hospital, Elmira.
She was predeceased by her husband, William P. May in 1977 and her son, Lewis P. May in 1983. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and James M. Reinsmith of Elmira; daughter-in-law, Susan May Jones of Stuart, FL; grandchildren, Michael and Barbara Dandrea of Horseheads and Karen Dandrea of Provo, UT; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Aaron & Blake Dandrea.
She was born December 9, 1899 in Fairfield, CT to Edward Everrett Lewis and Annie May Lockwood. She graduated from the American School for the deaf in Hartford in 1916 and entered Gallaudet College in Washington, DC. After earning a BA in 1921 she joined the staff of the Hispanic Society of America and continued that association for the rest of her life.
In college she was active in dramatics and in the 1940’s taught sign language to the original cast of “Johnny Belinda” at the Belasco Theatre in New York City as well as later cast of the play’s revival. She was awarded an honorary MA from Gallaudet in 1945 and was an active member of the Gallaudet University Alumni Association and XI Chapter of Phi Kappa Zeta.
Mrs. May was curator of Textiles at the H.S.A. retiring in 1981 after 60 years of service. She was the author of volumes on Spanish laces, embroideries and textiles as well as many articles and poetry. Her work Rugs of Spain & Morocco was published in 1977. At the time of her death, she was at work on Volume II of Silk Textiles of Spain.
