Jefferson Joshua Lewis was born July 3, 1841, at Leipsic, Orange county, Ind.; died Dec. 6, 1904 at his home in this city, aged 63 years, 5 months and 3 days.
Mr. Lewis, when but 16 years of age, confessed his faith in his Savior and was baptised at Carters Creek church. He was married to Mary Frances Ralston, Dec. 19, 1867. Two children, a son and daughter were the fruits of this union. Mr. Lewis came to Kansas Feb. 13, 1884 and his family came a few days later locating on a farm north of this city which he owned at the time of his death.
Mr. Lewis moved to this city, Sept. 1, 1903. He had recently built a fine home but death claimed its own before he was able to enjoy it long. He was a good neighbor, honest and upright and as a proof of their love and admiration the funeral was attended by one of the largest number of people ever present at a similar occasion in this city. The services were held from the Christian church, Thursday at 3 p.m., services being conducted by Elder Broadus. The remains were laid to rest in the Belle Plaine cemetery.
