A French Camp native, Mr. Curtis was a volunteer firefighter and a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. He was Choctaw County Civil Defense director and attended Mississippi State University and Holmes Junior College. Mr. Curtis was an elder, youth counselor and choir member at Enon-Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
"I can't tell you how many people have told me how much he's going to be missed in the community," said Joe Curtis of Louisville, his brother. "He was really concerned with other people." He said his brother's work with the volunteer fire department and Civil Defense showed his dedication to help others. "He was always out hunting down people who were lost and helping elderly people," he 'said. "He just had a genuine commitment to other people."
Wayne McDonald, a friend for 27 years, said Robert Curtis was outgoing. "Nobody was a stranger to him," McDonald said. "Life was business and life insurance was his occupation."
McDonald said Mr. Curtis liked golf but "gardening was his big hobby. He spent hours and hours out in his garden, McDonald said.
Survivors include wife, Becky; daughter, Tiffany Curtis of Ackerman; mother, Hazel Coleman of Ackerman; sister, Charlotte Curtis of Gulfport; and brother, Tommy Curtis of Ackerman.
