Francis "Butch" Sheffer was welcomed to his new home, which had been prepared for him by his beloved wife, on Tuesday, June 20, 2006. Butch was involved in an automobile accident Tuesday while trying to return to his beloved family farm.
Butch married the love of his life, Virginia A. Valleau, on Sept. 23, 1944, at St. Francis Church in Traverse City, by The Most Reverend Wm. J. Schueller. Sadly, Butch lost the smile in his eyes with the passing of his wife on Dec. 14, 2005.
Born on the family farm in Cedar on July 9, 1922, to parents, Peter E. and Barbara Sheffer. He lived there throughout his teen years, after which time, he moved to Traverse City to start his grown up years that lay ahead.
Butch was an excellent mechanic, employed by Waddell Buick for many years, while he and Virginia raised their family of seven healthy children. After leaving Waddell's, Butch drove truck for Dixon Distributing Company for several years before his retirement.
Butch was never a man who needed worldly goods to make him happy, but during the summer of 1967 a dream of his was realized. He purchased a wonderful family farm that he had only dreamt about someday owning. At that point, he could begin his life as a farmer! He and Virginia always had their hearts and doors open for all.
Probably the most loved of all of his processions, besides his farm, was his team of workhorses. For years, after being diagnosed with difficult health issues, he continued to farm behind his team. Even on the morning of his death, Butch was working his crops. He and Virginia made hundreds of people happy during the summer months when they were on their front porch with wonderful sweet corn to sell for everyone's table.
Francis is survived by all seven of his children who live in the Grand Traverse area. They include, Tom (Sue), Sue (Jerry) Swift, Jim (Chris), John (Darlene), Jerry (Nancy), Judy (Barb) and Dan (Jane). He also leaves his 11 cherished grandchildren and eight beautiful great-grandchildren. "A family any man would be proud to have," as Butch said over and over. Also surviving are brother, Peter of Cedar; and sisters, Cora, Dora and Georgia. Many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
