Curtis Nelson Ellzey Sr. (1898-1981), age 82 years, 507 Lee Street, died at 11:36 p.m. Saturday in Howard Memorial Hospital.
Curtis was born in Osyka, Pike County, Mississippi and had been a resident of Biloxi since 1916. He was the retired owner and operator of Ellzey's Hardware Store. Before commencing his hardware business, Mr. Ellzey was in 1917 the manager of L. Lopez and Company, a mercantile store, on West Howard Avenue. He also opened a grocery and market in 1922 at 1531 East Beach.(The Daily Herald, April 13, 1922, p. 8)
A Baptist, Mr. Ellzey was a former member of the Biloxi Chamber of Commerce and a past member of the board of directors of the People's Bank and the Biloxi Housing Authority.
Curtis married Carmelee Bougeard (1901-1983) in Harrison County, Mississippi on January 18, 1920. They were the parents of: Curtis Nelson Ellzey Jr. (1921-2003) m. Lorraine May Duffel (1918-2007); Mark J. Ellzey (1923-2004) m. Mary Kinton (1926-1993); and Jerry Scott Ellzey (1931-1990) m. Shirley Ann Eggers (1931-2002).
In June 1945, Curtis N. Ellzey married Rita Veronica Boudwin (1919-1984), the daughter of Xavier Boudwin (1879-1956) and Premise Stevens Boudin (1882-1948). They were the parents of: Grant T. Ellzey m. Kathryn Denis King, Carol Louise Robinson, and Karen Jo Desporte; Joy Ellzey m. Mr. LaBruyere and Mary Gay Ellzey m. Robert Joseph Askin Jr.
Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home of Biloxi directed the funeral of Mr. Ellzey with services in their Howard Avenue chapel. His burial followed in Southern Memorial Park.
