His wife was Beverley DuBose Hamer Peery (1913-1997), who was also a playwright, and became a drama professor at the University of New Orleans. They were married in 1939 and collaborated on historical dramatic works, such as: United we stand : a dramatization of North Carolina's entering the Union; and To make men free."
